BIOGRAPHY
Growing up in Upstate New York, Helene Macaulay’s earliest artistic influences derived principally from her training in classical ballet and Graham technique. As a teenager, she discovered fashion magazines, and was strongly influenced by some of the iconic photographers of the era like Guy Bourdin, Jean Loup Sieff and Helmut Newton. After graduating high school, she spent more than two decades as a fashion and celebrity makeup artist in New York, Los Angeles and Milan, which lent her a discerning aesthetic and a clear eye for detail. Her work has taken her throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, further honing her visual acumen. An accomplished documentary filmmaker, she founded her production company, Little Death Films, in 2004. She is Co-Executive Producer and Co-Director of Frankie’s Mambo: El Ritmo Diablo and Chema’s House, which aired on various PBS affiliates, including WNET in New York and WBGH in Boston. During the past several years, she has built a portfolio of still images, including portraits of many of her close friends and clients. Her still photography work has been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery in London as part of the John Kobal Photographic Portrait Awards, which also toured other major cities throughout the United Kingdom. She presently divides her time between Los Angeles and New York City.
